WASHINGTON, D.C., June 18, 2009 — The Council for Responsible Nutrition's (CRN) popular one day symposium, The Workshop: CRN's Day of Science, will take place Wednesday, October 21, at the luxurious, new Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. The Workshop will feature top scientific experts in the fields of nutrition and dietary supplements, offering thought-provoking insights on the timeliest issues surrounding research. The full-day symposium provides an affordable opportunity for dietary supplement industry and nutrition scientists, academics and healthcare professionals to engage in philosophical and practical discussion.

This year’s theme, “Dietary Supplement Research: Interpreting the Past and Planning for the future,” will examine some of the recent controversial research involving dietary supplements and attempt to provide a look ahead at how research should be modified, from both the researcher and practitioner perspective. Norman Farnsworth, Ph.D., University of Illinois, Chicago will kick off the day with his Keynote presentation entitled “The Enigma of Botanical Dietary Supplements—Synergy—Can it be Studied?” The Workshop will then be split into three consecutive sessions, each focusing on a different area of scientific research.

Session I: Different perspectives on nutritional supplement research
Session One will offer different perspectives on the implications of recently published high-profile randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and discussion on how the design of such trials might be modified for the future. Featured speakers include J. Michael Gaziano, M.D., M.P.H., Harvard University and Alan R. Kristal, Dr.P.H., Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The session, which includes time for Q&A, will be moderated by Paul Coates, Ph.D., Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Session II: Scientific and methodological issues in dietary supplement research
Session Two begins with a presentation by Joseph M. Betz, Ph.D., ODS, NIH, who will focus on the challenges—and potential solutions—of the scientific evaluation of botanicals and specialty dietary supplements. Following will be a presentation on using an integrative approach to overcoming the methodological and evidentiary challenges in dietary supplement research.

Session III: The responsibility of the practicing physician; interpreting research into practice
The day concludes with a presentation from Dennis Bier, M.D., Baylor College of Medicine on the role of dietary supplements in health maintenance and disease management. David S. Jones, M.D., Institute for Functional Medicine, will then discuss the role of healthcare practitioners in interpreting studies and providing proper context.
