Congressman Recognizes the Council for Responsible Nutrition's 40th Anniversary in the Congressional Record

WASHINGTON, D.C., August 7, 2013—Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO) last week entered remarks into the Congressional Record honoring CRN on its 40th anniversary, noting the leading trade association represents companies which are committed to responsible industry, and recognizing the influence the association has had on the dietary supplement industry and “the promise it gives for industry and consumers alike in the years to come.”

“As the respected voice of the dietary supplement industry, CRN has been at the forefront of supporting landmark legislation and regulation that benefit consumers; playing a key role in the passage of the Nutrition Labeling Education Act of 1990 and the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA),” Rep. Polis said in his statement, noting CRN’s collaborations with FDA and FTC on the implementation of DSHEA and its role in urging the creation of Good Manufacturing Practices and “a voluntary, self-regulatory advertising review program to monitor false, deceptive and misleading dietary supplement advertising.” He also cited the association’s consumer wellness education campaign, “Life…supplemented,” stating it “exemplifies CRN’s commitment to helping individuals create a healthier lifestyle by offering actionable suggestions and educational information about the three pillars of a smart wellness regimen: healthy diet, exercise and dietary supplements.”

Rep. Polis, who serves as co-chair of the Dietary Supplement Caucus and is a strong advocate of the dietary supplement industry in the House of Representatives, acknowledged the environment CRN has created over the past four decades that “allows companies to responsibly develop, manufacture and market dietary supplements and nutritional ingredients that enable consumers to live healthier lives.” He proceeded to say, “[CRN] continues to serve as a credible and respected scientific resource for Congress, regulators, scientists, journalists and consumers on all matters related to dietary supplements, including demonstrating the health-related and economic benefits that dietary supplements can provide.”

CRN and its member companies join Rep. Polis in honoring its 40th anniversary, and thank him for his support. CRN’s 40th anniversary will be officially celebrated this year at its annual conference for the dietary supplement industry taking place Sept. 18-21 at The Montage Deer Valley, Park City, Utah.
