CRN Adds Two Keynoters for Upcoming Annual Day of Science

WASHINGTON, D.C., August 9, 2012Balz Frei, Ph.D., director of the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University and Lawrence Green, Dr.P.H., D.Sc., professor at the University of California at San Francisco, will keynote the first and last sessions respectively at the Council for Responsible Nutrition’s (CRN) one-day scientific symposium, The Workshop: CRN’s Day of Science, to be held Wednesday, Oct. 3 at the Montage Laguna Beach in Laguna Beach, Calif.

In the Opening Keynote, titled “Assembling evidence and informing decisions on nutrition policies in the absence of robust Phase III Randomized Control Trial (RCT) data: the case of vitamin C,” Dr. Frei will tee-up a thought-provoking presentation about how the scientific research community may be inappropriately studying nutrition.

Dr. Green’s Closing Keynote address titled, “Considerations in evidence to inform policy for obesity prevention: the IOM report on the LEAD framework” will focus on one of America’s most pressing health epidemics, where policy decisions are urgently needed in the absence of gold standard RCT data. Dr. Green chairs the Institute of Medicine’s committee on Evaluating Progress on the Nation’s Progress in Obesity Prevention.

The Workshop, which is open to CRN members and non-members, will examine the need for the scientific community to look beyond RCTs as the only gold standard for evaluating the benefit of nutrients on health maintenance and chronic disease prevention.  Each speaker will focus on a different research methodology and how it contributes to the totality of evidence that helps the scientific and policy communities understand the role of nutrition in health.

CRN’s Day of Science will be held in tandem with The Conference: CRN’s Annual Symposium for the Dietary Supplement Industry.  The scientific symposium ends the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 3 with a joint networking reception for the opening of The Conference, which runs through Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012. There are flexible registration options available for those who want to attend both events, a shorter combination of both events, or The Workshop or The Conference individually. Online registration and other information are available on CRN’s website at http://www.crnusa.org/2012events/.
