Washington, D.C., October 17, 2016—The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), the leading trade association for the dietary supplement and functional food industry, today announced a $10,000 donation to the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. The educational grant will be used over a multi-year time frame for graduate students to attend The Workshop: CRN’s Day of Science. The annual, one-day scientific symposium features presentations from highly regarded researchers with expertise in nutrition and dietary supplement research.
“We are fully aware of the critical role that nutrition plays in good health, and understand the importance of encouraging and supporting students seeking further education, and hopefully careers, in nutrition science and policy,” said Duffy MacKay, N.D., senior vice president, scientific and regulatory affairs, CRN. “We have enormous respect for the graduate programs at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, and we are pleased to have the opportunity to contribute to their efforts. As consumers show a growing interest in making dietary supplements one component of their health regimens, CRN encourages more research be conducted on these products and their ingredients, and that more policy experts understand nutrition science.”
The Friedman School will select up to two graduate students each year based on their academic record and their commitment to research, and the educational grant will provide funding for travel expenses related to The Workshop (CRN will waive the symposium’s registration fee).
This donation is the latest in CRN’s efforts to support the nutrition research community. Since 2008, CRN has provided the American Society of Nutrition (ASN) with annual education grants for nutrition researchers through the Mary Swartz Rose Awards, which are presented to a senior and a junior investigator in the field of essential nutrients and bioactive food components.
