CRN to Host Satellite Scientific Session at Experimental Biology—Presenters to Address Nutrient Gaps of Concern for Americans, Vitamins and Chronic Disease

Washington, D.C., April 10, 2014—The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), the dietary supplement industry’s leading trade association, is sponsoring a satellite scientific session at the American Society for Nutrition’s (ASN) Experimental Biology (EB) 2014 meeting in San Diego. The breakfast session titled, “Mind the Gap! Addressing Nutrients of Concern for Americans,” will take place on Saturday, April 26, from 6:30–8:00 a.m., at the San Diego Bayfront Hilton, Sapphire Ballroom.

The session will explore findings from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) that demonstrate that in large proportions of the population, micronutrient insufficiency exists for several essential vitamins and minerals when food and dietary supplements, including multivitamin/minerals, are considered. Further, the session will showcase how multivitamin supplements contribute to micronutrient intakes and will provide a perspective on the effects of multivitamin supplements and disease. Speakers include: Victor Fulgoni, III, Ph.D., Nutrition Impact, LLC; Michael McBurney, Ph.D., FACN, DSM Nutritional Products; and Michael Gaziano, M.D., MPH, Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

“CRN is pleased to present this valuable ASN satellite session as part of its commitment to supporting scientific inquiry into nutritional topics,” said Duffy MacKay, N.D., senior vice president, scientific and regulatory affairs, CRN. “New data showing that nutrient consumption is lower than recommended will be presented and discussed in the context of public health and the importance of Americans achieving nutrition adequacy.”

CRN’s satellite session is free (registration for the session is required) and participants do not need to be registered for EB to attend. All ASN EB satellites sessions are approved for continuing education credit. Find out more, and register, on the EB Scientific Sessions website

CRN will have an additional presence at the ASN event. Dr. MacKay will present a poster entitled, “Health Habits and Other Characteristics of Dietary Supplement Users: A Review,” based on the review he co-authored with CRN consultant Annette Dickinson, Ph.D., published in Nutrition Journal. In addition, Jim Griffiths, Ph.D., vice president, scientific and international affairs, CRN, will present a poster along with lead co-author Joanne Lupton, Ph.D., Texas A&M University, on their paper published in the European Journal of Medicine, “Exploring the Benefits and Challenges of Establishing a DRI-like Process for Bioactives.”

On Sunday evening, Dr. MacKay will present the 2014 Mary Swartz Rose awards to recognize outstanding research on the safety and efficacy of bioactive compounds for human health. The awards are jointly presented by ASN and CRN to a senior investigator and junior investigator.
