Staff Bios

Steve Mister, Esq.
President & CEO

Mr. Mister has been President & CEO of CRN since 2005. Under his leadership, CRN has experienced increased membership, refined its strategic focus, and launched new initiatives to enhance consumer confidence in the supplement industry. CRN has vigorously advanced the industry’s interests in Congress, with FDA and the FTC, and while promoting sound science as the basis for both policy formation and product development. In addition to his role as President of CRN, he is also the President of the CRN Foundation. Among the Foundation’s achievements are the creation of a highly successful consumer wellness education campaign (Life…supplemented) and a program with the National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus to review supplement advertising.

Prior to joining CRN, Mr. Mister served in several legal and legislative roles for over a decade at the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), most recently as Vice President and Associate General Counsel. Mr. Mister also worked as an attorney in the Washington, D.C., law firm of Wiley, Rein & Fielding in general litigation, government ethics, and federal election law practice groups, and had a stint on Capitol Hill as a media relations assistant for former U.S. Senator Charles McC. Mathias, Jr. Mr. Mister holds a law degree from the College of William and Mary, an M.A. in Political Communication from the University of Maryland and a B.S. from Towson University.


Judy Blatman
Senior Vice President, Communications

Ms. Blatman has more than 25 years experience in the communications field, including expertise in issues management, lifestyle consumer marketing, crisis communications and development and execution of results-oriented publicity campaigns. She has worked in the consumer/health group of a large international public relations agency (Manning, Selvage & Lee), led public relations efforts for a luxury resort company (Princess Hotels International, Inc.), and managed communications efforts for an alcohol industry trade association (Distilled Spirits Council). At CRN, she is responsible for overseeing the development and execution of the association’s overall strategic communications efforts, and manages the Life…supplemented consumer wellness education initiative. Ms. Blatman serves on the CRN Foundation Board. She has a B.A. in English from the University at Albany (SUNY), New York.


Mike Greene
Vice President, Government Relations

Mr. Greene has more than 20 years of experience working in government relations, public policy, political campaigns and communications. He oversees the association’s federal and state legislative strategy, and is treasurer of CRN’s Political Action Committee (CRN PAC). Prior to joining CRN, Mr. Greene served as communication director for U.S. Rep. John D. Dingell of Michigan, worked on the Subcommittee on Disability Policy for Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa, and began his career in television at WPLG-TV, the ABC affiliate in Miami. He received his B.A. in International Relations and Political Geography from Florida State University.


James C. Griffiths, Ph.D.
Vice President, Scientific & International Affairs

Dr. Griffiths is responsible for CRN’s science-based international policy and regulatory work, and is the CRN staff liaison for CRN International (CRN-I). He has more than 25 years of experience in the area of food safety and regulatory affairs. Prior to joining CRN, he spent five years with the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) where he managed food and dietary supplement strategic initiatives, including those related to global food and dietary supplement alliances. He began his career as a regulatory review toxicologist at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. His background also includes various scientific and regulatory positions at Burdock and Associates, the Flavor & Extract Manufacturers’ Association, International Specialty Products, Avon Products, and others. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed publications, and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Excipients and Food Chemicals. He is currently serving a two-year term as president for both the Toxicology and Safety Division, Institute of Food Technologists, and the Society of Toxicology’s Food Safety Specialty Section. Dr. Griffiths holds a B.A. in biology from Columbia Union College in Maryland and earned his Ph.D. in Toxicology from Rutgers University & Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey.


Duffy MacKay, N.D.
Vice President, Scientific & Regulatory Affairs

Dr. MacKay oversees CRN’s science and regulatory affairs department, ensuring that the association’s scientific, policy and legislative positions are based on credible scientific rationale. His expertise combines practical knowledge of industry regulation and scientific product development with hands-on experience as a medical practitioner. He is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor who still sees patients on a part-time basis in an integrative medical practice, and previously spent seven years as a co-owner and practitioner in a family-owned New Hampshire complementary and alternative medicine private practice. Prior to joining CRN, he worked as a medical consultant for two companies in the dietary supplement industry, including a position at Nordic Naturals, where he was in charge of clinical research, and as Technical Advisor for Thorne Research. Dr. MacKay has published articles in peer-reviewed journals, and serves on the Editorial Board of three peer-reviewed publications: Alternative Medicine Review, Integrative Medicine: A Clinician’s Journal and Natural Medicine Journal. In addition he serves on the Advisory Board for the American Botanical Council and on the NSF International Joint Committee on Dietary Supplements. He is also Chair of the Steering Committee for the SIDI Work Group. Dr. MacKay earned his B.S. in Marine Sciences from the University of California, Santa Cruz and his N.D. from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon.


Taylor C. Wallace, Ph.D., FACN
Senior Director, Scientific & Regulatory Affairs

Dr. Wallace is responsible for providing scientific and regulatory expertise for evaluating scientific research, providing input to ensure CRN’s policy positions are science-based, and developing new scientific reviews and manuscripts for the peer-reviewed literature. Prior to joining CRN, Dr. Wallace led the science communications initiatives at the North American Branch of the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI North America). Dr. Wallace publishes regularly in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and is a reviewer for six top-tier food science and nutrition journals. In addition, with his scientific expertise in the area of flavonoids, he is the co-editor of Anthocyanins in Health and Disease Promotion to be published by CRC Press in 2013. He was recently elected a fellow of the American College of Nutrition, and is on the editorial board for the Journal of the American College of Nutrition. Dr. Wallace is a member of the Institute of Food Technologists, the National Osteoporosis Foundation, the American Society of Nutrition, the American College of Nutrition and the Phi Tau Sigma Honor Society for Food and Technology. He currently serves as a Trustee and acting Treasurer of Feeding Tomorrow, the Foundation of the Institute of Food Technologists. Dr. Wallace has a Ph.D. and an M.S. in Food Science and Technology from The Ohio State University and a B.S. in Food Science and Technology from the University of Kentucky.


Rend Al-Mondhiry, Esq.
Regulatory Counsel

Ms. Al-Mondhiry has more than five years of legal and regulatory experience. At CRN, she provides legal counsel and advice to CRN’s staff and members in the areas of legislation, regulatory compliance and advocacy, and international policy development with respect to dietary supplements and nutrition issues. Prior to joining CRN, Ms. Al-Mondhiry worked as state legislative counsel for the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA). At the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, she served as the director of state legislative and regulatory advocacy. She has also held legal internships at the Federal Communications Commission, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission, and the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General. Ms. Al-Mondhiry worked at the state legislative level as an aide to Pennsylvania State Senator Jake Corman for two years followed by a stint as the executive director of the Pennsylvania Senate Communications and Technology Committee. She received her B.A. from The George Washington University, and she earned her J.D. from Pennsylvania State University, Dickinson School of Law. She has been admitted to the Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Washington, D.C. Bars.


Carl Hyland
Director, Membership Development

Mr. Hyland has more than 25 years experience in business development, sales, marketing, and operations within the dietary supplement, ingredients and natural foods industries. At CRN, he is responsible for overseeing all aspects of membership services and new member recruitment. His career includes over a decade with Weider/Schiff where he rose to corporate vice president, serving as vice president of the Corporate Development, Purchasing and Product Development departments, and helped launch the company’s SHAPE magazine. Mr. Hyland was Editor of Let’s LIVE Magazine, the monthly journal of nutrition and health. His career also includes management positions at Frey Enterprises, Nutravail Technologies and AmeriFIT. Most recently, Mr. Hyland worked in media sales with NewsUSA Inc., focusing on sales and marketing of the company’s social media network. Mr. Hyland received his B.A. in English from the University of California at Berkeley.


Sandra Khouri
Director, Operations

Ms. Khouri has 30 years of experience working in finance and administration. Prior to joining CRN, Ms. Khouri served in several organization management roles, including as director of finance and administration for the Kentucky Bankers Association, and more recently as the administrator of Memphis, Tennessee-based law firm Spicer Rudstrom. She also has a significant amount of volunteer experience, including chairing a main fundraising event for an independent school in Louisville, Kentucky. Ms. Khouri holds a B.S. in Accounting and an M.B.A., both from the University of Louisville.


Ingrid Lebert
Director, Government Relations

Ms. Lebert manages legislative activity for CRN, presenting association and industry positions to congressional offices. In addition, she monitors federal and state legislative and regulatory activity and is responsible for coordinating educational briefings and advocacy events on Capitol Hill. Prior to joining CRN, she worked in the Intellectual Property division of the international law firm McKenna, Long & Aldridge, and at the legislative consulting company Klein & Saks. Ms. Lebert earned her B.S. in psychology at South Dakota State University.


Gretchen Powers
Director, Marketing Communications

Ms. Powers has more than 15 years of experience in visual and written communications. She oversees CRN's graphic identity, including CRN’s website and marketing materials for the association’s events and educational programs. Ms. Powers is responsible for the association’s member company newsletter and associate membership benefits program. In addition, she is the CRN liaison for social media platforms serving healthcare practitioners. Associated with CRN since 1999, Ms. Powers rejoined the CRN in-house team after several years as an independent communications consultant. Earlier in her career, Ms. Powers worked for the Chicago architectural firm Holabird & Root. She holds a B.A. in Graphic Design from St. Xavier University in Chicago and studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Corcoran College of Art + Design in Washington, D.C.


Nancy Stewart
Director, Communications

Ms. Stewart works with journalists, facilitating interviews with CRN experts, providing information on the dietary supplement industry, and suggesting story angles. She also oversees CRN's annual consumer survey on dietary supplements. Ms. Stewart joined CRN from Powell Tate, a strategic communications and public affairs firm in Washington, D.C., where she served as a member of the healthcare practice. During her five years at the firm, she implemented campaigns involving media relations, third-party advocacy, event coordination and executive visibility for corporate clients, trade associations, nonprofit organizations and government entities. Ms. Stewart received a B.A. in English and French Literature from Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.


Haiuyen Nguyen
Senior Manager, Scientific Research & Regulatory Affairs

Ms. Nguyen provides research assistance and administrative support to the scientists at CRN. She is involved in department projects including production of CRN’s Research Watch, a service for association members, and serves as a main contact and resource for CRN's Regulatory Affairs Committee and Senior Scientific Advisory Council. She served as a research intern at FDA's Center for Food Safety and Nutrition (CFSAN) prior to joining CRN. Ms. Nguyen received her B.S. in Cell, Molecular Biology and Genetics from the University of Maryland, College Park.


Tammie Betway
Senior Executive Assistant to the President & CEO

Ms. Betway is responsible for assisting the President & CEO, keeping official corporate records, coordinating communication between the president and member companies and performing other various duties. She has over twenty years of experience in the legal industry ranging from research and writing to providing multiple levels of administrative support. In the course of her career, Ms. Betway has worked at several of Washington, D.C.’s largest law firms, including Venable LLP and Patton Boggs LLP. Prior to joining CRN she worked as a legal assistant, contract specialist and business development coordinator.
