Marilyn Barrett, Ph.D.

Marilyn Barrett PhD is a researcher, author and consultant with a broad background in the botany, chemistry and pharmacology of medicinal plants. As founder and principal of Pharmacognosy Consulting, Marilyn has served the dietary supplement & botanical drug industries for the past 24 years. She is also an adjunct professor at Touro University-California College of Pharmacy where she lectures on the study of medicinal plants.

Dr Barrett obtained her PhD in pharmacognosy from the School of Pharmacy, University of London, UK, where she isolated and identified two novel diprenylated flavonoids in Cannabis sativa with anti-inflammatory potential. She named them “Cannflavin” A and B. Marilyn previously obtained a BA in Botany from the University of California in Berkeley.

Dr Barrett is editor and author of a 2 volume book titled The Handbook of Clinically Tested Herbal Remedies that was published in 2004. She wrote a pamphlet for CRN titled, Reference on Evaluating Botanicals that was published in 1998.

Marilyn was a member of the United States Pharmacopoeia Committee of Experts on Dietary Supplements from 2000 to 2015. She is a member of the American Botanical Council Advisory Board, the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia and Therapeutic Compendium Technical Advisory Board, and the American Herbal Products Association's Scientific Advisory Board.
