As the leading association for the dietary supplement and functional foods industry, CRN applauds this new supplement research that paves the way to improved understanding of the role nutrition plays for human health. The COcoa Supplement and Multivitamin Outcomes Study (COSMOS) is exactly that kind of research.

Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), the leading trade association for the dietary supplement and functional food industry, today announced promotions for four staffers and two new employees to its team. Megan Olsen was promoted to senior vice president and general counsel; Gretchen Powers, to vice president, marketing and member experience; Haiuyen Nguyen, to vice president, regulatory and nutrition policy; and Tammie Betway, to office director and executive assistant to the CEO. Daniel Garza and Elise Hall joined CRN as legislative and legal assistant and communications assistant, respectively.

Congratulations to Dr. Califf on his confirmation as FDA Commissioner. CRN supports his confirmation, and we look forward to working with Dr. Califf and other FDA leaders to keep strengthening the dietary supplement and functional food industry and protecting consumers’ ability to access safe and beneficial products. We’ll do this together by ensuring products continue to meet all regulatory requirements.

The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), the leading trade association for the dietary supplement and functional food industry, responded to a recent commentary appearing in the Military Times and other publications that called for a centralized reporting system in the military for adverse events reported by dietary supplement users.

Results from a study, Adverse effects associated with use of specific dietary supplements: The US Military Dietary Supplement Use Study, were recently published in Food and Chemical Toxicity.

A new study published in BMJ showed vitamin D and omega-3 fish oil supplementation protected people over 50 against developing autoimmune disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and inflammatory bowel disease.

The Council for Responsible Nutrition today announced it filed comments with FDA calling for the agency to respond to its citizen petition on the status of products containing N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC). CRN expressed its dissatisfaction with the agency’s most recent response, provided evidence of NAC as a safe, grandfathered ingredient, and stressed the need for a “substantive” response from FDA about the status of NAC as a legal dietary supplement ingredient.

CRN applauds FDA’s announcement today to exercise enforcement discretion for qualified health claims regarding magnesium and reduced risk of high blood pressure. The announcement was in response to a petition sponsored by CRN and other organizations filed on behalf of the Center for Magnesium Education and Research LLC, and allows qualified health claims on the relationship between magnesium and a reduced risk of high blood pressure in conventional foods and dietary supplements.
